While the game is technically set in the Tokugawa period (early 1600's), it's really set in the myth of the samurai drama, rather than in history. Historical accuracy is not as important as the feeling or mood of the costume.
For the purposes of setting an immersive mood, costuming is required for this game. If it's not possible for you to make, borrow or buy Japanese style clothing, please wear black pants and a plain white shirt.
